How to use tithe maps online
My journey researching the NMC site began with the discovery of Cheshire tithe maps online, an initiative of Cheshire Archives and Local Studies. The website contains over 400 tithe maps, stitched together electronically to form a continuous and (more or less) seamless map of the whole of the ancient county of Cheshire, as well as a few townships in the Warrington area, which can be used alongside other historic mapping, to provide a unique record of land ownership, occupancy and use.
Maybe the maps could help shine a light on what the NMC meadow had been used for in years gone by I thought, so in early 2020 I contacted Lisa Greenhalgh from Cheshire Archives and Local Studies who agreed to help with my investigations and this subsequently developed into the blog post below, which uses the NMC site as an example of how to use tithe maps online to explore the history of a house, a plot of land or another place of interest.
